How to play Texas Hold'em

1. Everybody sits down with 1000 play chips. Each hand, two cards are dealt face down to every player, and five community cards come out on the board: three (the FLOP), one (the TURN), one (the RIVER), with a round of betting before the flop and after each street.
2. The dealer button (D) moves one seat left each hand. The seat after it posts the SMALL BLIND and the next the BIG BLIND before the cards are dealt. Heads-up the dealer posts the small blind.
3. On your turn: FOLD (give up the hand), CHECK (when nothing is owed) or CALL (match the biggest bet), or BET / RAISE. This is no-limit: you may bet anything up to your whole stack. A raise must be at least the size of the last raise, unless it puts you all in.
4. A player who is ALL IN stays in the hand for the chips they could match; the rest goes into a SIDE POT the others play for. Every chip is accounted for — an uncalled bet comes back to you.
5. If everybody else folds, the last player in takes the pot without showing. Otherwise the SHOWDOWN: the best five-card hand from your two cards and the five on the board wins — royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, pair, high card. Ties split.
6. The blinds climb every 8 hands (10/20, 15/30, 25/50, 50/100 …). Out of chips is out of the game; you keep your seat to watch. The last stack standing wins.

The basics that turn knowing the rules into winning games — what to do first, what to keep, what to avoid.

• Fold most hands before the flop. Pairs, two high cards, and suited connectors are worth a call or a raise; seven-deuce is worth nothing at any price.
• Position is money. Acting last (on the button) you see everybody else's decision first — play more hands there, fewer from the blinds.
• Bet your strong hands. Checking a set down to the river invites a free draw; a bet of half to a full pot makes the draws pay.
• Count the pot odds. If the pot is 300 and the call is 100, you need to win one time in four — a flush draw on the flop wins more often than that, a gutshot does not.
• Watch the stacks, not just the cards. A short stack goes all in with less; a player who suddenly bets big on a scary board usually has it.
• The blinds climb. Sitting tight through level 1 is fine; sitting tight through level 5 is how the blinds take your stack without a showdown.
