How to play FreeCell

1. Fifty-two cards are dealt face up into eight cascades — four of seven cards, four of six. You can see everything from the start.
2. Build the four foundations up by suit from ace to king. All fifty-two cards home wins.
3. On the cascades, cards go down in rank and alternate colour: a red six on a black seven. Tap a card to pick it up — with every card below it in the run — then tap where it goes.
4. Any card may start an empty cascade; there is no king rule.
5. The four free cells each hold ONE card. Park a card there to reach the one beneath it, and bring it back down whenever it fits.
6. HOW MANY CARDS CAN MOVE AT ONCE: moving a run is really moving its cards one at a time through the free cells and empty columns, so the limit is (free cells + 1), doubled for every empty column. With all four cells free and no empty column that is 5; with 3 free cells and 1 empty column it is 8. But an empty column the run is going INTO cannot help it get there, so moving into an empty column allows half as many — 4 in that example. The table only offers moves that fit, and tells you the limit while you hold a run.
7. Send home plays every card that is safe to play to the foundations. A position with no legal move at all ends the deal — a loss, dealt again with Play Again.

FreeCell strategy

• Almost every deal is winnable. Before the first move, look for the aces and twos and plan how to dig them out.
• Free cells are precious: fill them only to make a bigger move possible, and empty them again as soon as you can. An empty column is worth two free cells.
• Empty a column early — the one with the fewest cards, or one whose cards all have places to go.
• Build long runs in alternating colour on the tableau; a run can move as one if you have the spaces (the status tells you how many).
• Get the aces and low cards of each suit home in step: a foundation stuck on a 4 will block that suit's cards in the tableau.

Is every FreeCell deal winnable?

Almost — of the classic million numbered deals only eight cannot be won. Ours are shuffled fresh, so a rare dead deal is possible; the table ends it for you when there is no legal move.

How many cards can I move at once?

The number of empty free cells plus one, doubled for each empty cascade — halved when the run is going to an empty cascade. The table only lights up moves that fit.

Can friends watch?

Yes. Share the table link and they can watch live and chat while you play.

Do I need an account?

No. Type a name and play — no signup, no download, nothing to install. Making an account is optional and only exists to keep your stats, nickname and preferences across devices.
