How to play Spider Solitaire

  1. Two decks โ€” 104 cards โ€” in ten piles: the first four get six cards, the rest five, only the top card face up. The other fifty wait in the stock.
  2. Build runs DOWN in rank. A card, or a same-suit run of cards, may move onto any card one rank higher, of any suit โ€” or onto an empty pile.
  3. Only a run of ONE suit moves as a unit. A red queen on a black king is legal, but that queen is on her own the next time she moves.
  4. Complete a run from king down to ace in one suit and it leaves the table. Eight of those and you win.
  5. When you are stuck, tap the stock: it deals one face-up card onto every pile. It will not deal while any pile is empty โ€” fill the gaps first.
  6. Choose one suit to learn the game, two for a challenge, four for the real thing. Scoring starts at 500, minus one per move, plus one hundred per completed run.
  7. No stock and no moves ends the deal. Give one up any time and deal again with Play Again.

Spider Solitaire FAQ

Which suit count should I pick?
One suit if you are learning: every run is the same suit, so any card fits on the one above it. Two suits is the popular middle. Four suits is the real game, and most deals lose.
Why will the stock not deal?
Spider deals a card onto every pile at once, so every pile must have a card first. Fill any empty pile, then deal.
Can I move a run of mixed suits?
No. A card can land on any card one rank higher, but only a run of one suit moves as a block.
Do I need an account?
No. Type a name and play โ€” no signup, no download, nothing to install. Making an account is optional and only exists to keep your stats, nickname and preferences across devices.
Is it really free?
Yes, all of it. Every game on Board Game Universe is free to play, with no premium tier holding anything back.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. It runs in a mobile browser on phones and tablets as well as on a desktop โ€” there is no app to download.
How do I play with my friends?
Start a table and send your friends the link. They open it, type a name, and sit down. Moves and table chat happen in real time.
Can I play against the computer?
Yes. Add a bot to any table and it plays a proper game โ€” useful for filling a seat while you wait for a fourth.
