How to play Euchre

1. Four players, two partnerships — you and the player across from you. The deck is 24 cards, nine to ace. Five each, and the top card of the rest is turned up.
2. BIDDING, round one: starting left of the dealer, each player may ORDER UP the turned card's suit as trump — the dealer picks the card up and discards one — or pass.
3. Round two, if all four pass: the card is turned down and each player may NAME any other suit as trump, or pass. The dealer, last to speak, must name one.
4. Whoever names trump may GO ALONE: their partner sits out and they play the hand three-handed.
5. The jack of trump is the RIGHT BOWER, the highest card; the other jack of the same colour is the LEFT BOWER, second highest, and counts as trump. Then A K Q 10 9 of trump, then the rest.
6. Follow suit if you can (the left bower is trump, not its printed suit). Highest trump wins the trick, else the highest card of the suit led. The winner leads next.
7. The side that named trump needs three of the five tricks: three or four scores 1, all five (a MARCH) scores 2 — or 4 alone. Fewer than three and they are EUCHRED: the other side scores 2. First to 10.
