How to play Porter Rico
- The Porter family runs a busy island port, and each of you runs one branch of the family business. Most points at the end wins.
- Each round, starting with the governor, everyone picks one role. Every player then takes that role's action in turn, but whoever picked it gets a bonus. Roles nobody picks gain a doubloon for next round.
- Settler: everyone takes one face-up plantation; the Settler may take a quarry instead. Mayor: workers come ashore and everyone puts them to work; the Mayor gets one extra.
- Builder: everyone may buy one building. The Builder pays 1 less, and each manned quarry takes off 1 more (up to the building's column). A building only works with a worker on it.
- Craftsman: each manned plantation with room in a manned production building makes one good (corn needs no building). The Craftsman takes one extra.
- Trader: everyone may sell one good to the Porter Trading House: corn 0, indigo 1, sugar 2, tobacco 3, coffee 4. It holds four and buys only kinds it does not already have. The Trader earns 1 more.
- Captain: everyone must load goods onto the ships, 1 VP per barrel, round and round until nobody can. A ship carries one kind, and a kind can be on only one ship. The Captain earns 1 VP more. Afterwards you keep one barrel, plus what your warehouses hold; the rest spoils.
- Prospector: take a doubloon.
- The game ends after the round in which the VP chips run out, the worker ship cannot be refilled, or someone fills their twelfth town space. Score your VP chips, your buildings and your large-building bonuses.
- Two players: you alternate, three roles each per round, with smaller supplies.
Porter Rico strategy
The basics that turn knowing the rules into winning games โ what to do first, what to keep, what to avoid.
- Early on, a Small Market or a Hacienda pays for itself many times over.
- Pick roles for what they give you minus what they give everyone after you: never call the Craftsman when your neighbour has a full coffee line.
- Two or three quarries make the big buildings cheap; more than that is usually wasted.
- Shipping wins long games: a Harbor or Wharf on top of steady corn and indigo piles up VP chips.
- Watch the clock: when the workers or the VP chips run low, buy the large building that scores what you already have.
