How to play Hangman

Guess the hidden word one letter at a time. The tiles show how many letters the word has.
A letter in the word appears in every place it belongs. A letter that is not in the word is a MISS, and each miss draws one more stroke of the figure: head, body, two arms, two legs. Six misses and the game is lost.
Think you know it? Solve lets you type the whole word. Right wins at once; wrong counts as a miss.

Hangman strategy

The basics that turn knowing the rules into winning games — what to do first, what to keep, what to avoid.

Start with the vowels: E and A first, then O, I and U. Nearly every word has at least one.
Then the common consonants: R, S, T, N, L. These five turn up in most English words.
Look at the shape. A word ending in _ING or _ED, a double letter, or a lone letter at the start all narrow it down.
Leave the rare letters (J, Q, X, Z) for last unless the pattern calls for them: a miss on one costs as much as a miss on E.
Solve as soon as you are sure. A right solve ends it at once, but a wrong one is a miss, so do not guess wildly with one stroke left.
