How to play 2048
- The board is a grid of tiles. SLIDE them all one way at once: swipe, press an arrow key (or W A S D), or tap an arrow under the board.
- Every tile slides as far as it can. Two tiles with the same number that run into each other JOIN into one tile worth both: two 2s make a 4, two 4s make an 8.
- A tile joins only once per slide: a row of 2 2 4 slid left becomes 4 4, not 8.
- After every slide a new tile, a 2 or now and then a 4, appears in an empty cell. A slide that would change nothing is not allowed.
- Your SCORE goes up by the value of every tile you make by joining.
- Make a 2048 tile to WIN. Then keep going for a bigger tile and a bigger score, or press Finish to take the win. When no slide can change the board, the game is over.
- Boards: Classic 4×4, Big 5×5 (more room, a longer game) and Huge 6×6.
2048 strategy
The basics that turn knowing the rules into winning games — what to do first, what to keep, what to avoid.
- Pick a corner and keep your biggest tile in it. Most good games use only two directions most of the time, say down and left, a third when stuck, and the fourth almost never.
- Keep the row along that corner full and in order, biggest to smallest, so each new tile can climb the row like a ladder.
- Do not chase merges in the middle of the board. A tidy board with room to move beats a quick 64 that leaves a 2 stranded in your corner.
- Watch the empty cells: with fewer than three, slow down and think about where the next tile can land.
- Stuck on which way? Press Hint: it lights the slide that looks best two tiles ahead. It is a nudge, not a solver.
2048 FAQ
- How do I win at 2048?
- Make a tile that says 2048. Keep your biggest tile in one corner, keep the row beside it in order, and slide mostly in two directions. The Hint button lights the slide that looks best.
- Can I keep playing after 2048?
- Yes. Making 2048 wins the game, and you can keep going for a bigger tile and score until the board fills up, or press Finish to stop with the win.
- How do I play on a phone?
- Swipe across the board in the direction you want the tiles to go, or tap the arrows under it.
- What are the bigger boards?
- Big 5×5 and Huge 6×6 give the tiles more room, so the game is easier and longer. Classic 4×4 is the original.
- Do I need an account?
- No. Type a name and play — no signup, no download, nothing to install. Making an account is optional and only exists to keep your stats, nickname and preferences across devices.
- Is it really free?
- Yes, all of it. Every game on Board Game Universe is free to play, with no premium tier holding anything back.
- Can I play on my phone?
- Yes. It runs in a mobile browser on phones and tablets as well as on a desktop — there is no app to download.
- How do I play with my friends?
- Start a table and send your friends the link. They open it, type a name, and sit down. Moves and table chat happen in real time.
- Can I play against the computer?
- Yes. Add a bot to any table and it plays a proper game — useful for filling a seat while you wait for a fourth.
