How to play Mahjong Solitaire

  1. A hundred and forty-four tiles are stacked in the shape of a turtle, five layers high. The aim is to take them all off the table.
  2. Tiles come off in matching PAIRS: tap one free tile, then another that matches it. Four of every tile are in the pile.
  3. A tile is FREE when nothing sits on top of it and at least one of its long sides — left or right — has no tile against it. Tiles that are not free stay dim.
  4. The suits: characters (萬 with a number), bamboo (green sticks), dots. Winds — 東 南 西 北. Dragons — red 中, green 發, white 白. The flowers 梅蘭菊竹 match any other flower; the seasons 春夏秋冬 match any other season.
  5. Every deal is built to be solvable from the start — but take the wrong pair and you can still lock the rest. Hint shows a pair you can play now.
  6. If no pair is left, Shuffle redeals the remaining tiles in place, solvably, and is counted against you. A clean win is one with no shuffles.
  7. Cleared the turtle? Play Again deals a fresh one on the same seat.

Mahjong Solitaire FAQ

Is this the four-player mahjong?
No — this is the solitaire tile-matching game most people mean by "mahjong" online: one player, a pile of tiles, match free pairs until the table is clear.
Which tiles match?
Identical tiles: the same number of the same suit, the same wind or dragon. The four flowers match any flower and the four seasons match any season.
Can every deal be won?
Yes. Deals are built backwards from an empty table, so a winning order always exists. You can still get stuck by taking the wrong pair — Shuffle redeals what is left, solvably.
When is a tile free?
Nothing on top of it, and its left or right side open. Tiles that are not free are shown dimmed.
Do I need an account?
No. Type a name and play — no signup, no download, nothing to install. Making an account is optional and only exists to keep your stats, nickname and preferences across devices.
Is it really free?
Yes, all of it. Every game on Board Game Universe is free to play, with no premium tier holding anything back.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. It runs in a mobile browser on phones and tablets as well as on a desktop — there is no app to download.
How do I play with my friends?
Start a table and send your friends the link. They open it, type a name, and sit down. Moves and table chat happen in real time.
Can I play against the computer?
Yes. Add a bot to any table and it plays a proper game — useful for filling a seat while you wait for a fourth.
