How to play Mahjong Solitaire

A hundred and forty-four tiles are stacked in the shape of a turtle, five layers high. The aim is to take them all off the table.
Tiles come off in matching PAIRS: tap one free tile, then another that matches it. Four of every tile are in the pile.
A tile is FREE when nothing sits on top of it and at least one of its long sides — left or right — has no tile against it. Tiles that are not free stay dim.
The suits: characters (萬 with a number), bamboo (green sticks), dots. Winds — 東南西北. Dragons — red 中, green 發, white 白. The flowers 梅蘭菊竹 match any other flower; the seasons 春夏秋冬 match any other season.
Every deal is built to be solvable from the start — but take the wrong pair and you can still lock the rest. Hint shows a pair you can play now.
If no pair is left, Shuffle redeals the remaining tiles in place, solvably, and is counted against you. A clean win is one with no shuffles.

Mahjong Solitaire strategy

The basics that turn knowing the rules into winning games — what to do first, what to keep, what to avoid.

Free the tiles that block the most others first: the long rows on the bottom layer and the tile on top of the turtle.
When a tile has three visible matches, match the two that free the most; if all four are visible, take any two — the other pair is a free move later.
Do not match a pair just because you can — check whether one of them is needed to reach a buried tile.
Work both ends of the layout evenly so the middle rows stay reachable.
Use Hint when you are stuck rather than shuffling; a shuffle throws away the position you have opened up.
