Play Canasta Online Free with Friends
Canasta, free and online, heads-up or in partnerships of four by link or against the house bots. The classic rummy of the fifties: two decks and four jokers, melds of seven for a canasta, taking the whole discard pile with the right pair, freezing it with a wild card, red threes laid aside for the bonus, and the first side to 5000. The table checks every meld and every pile-take for you and shows the score hand by hand. Real-time chat, no download, no signup.

How to play Canasta
- THE IDEA: two decks and four jokers. Make MELDS of three or more cards of one rank; a meld of seven is a CANASTA, and you need one to go out. First side to 5000 wins. Two players, or four in partnerships — partners sit across and share their melds and score.
- WILD CARDS are the jokers and the twos. A meld may hold up to three of them, but must always hold at least two natural cards. Threes are special: a RED THREE is laid aside the moment it reaches you (100 each, 800 for all four, and a replacement is drawn); a BLACK THREE can only be melded to go out, and discarding one blocks the pile for the next player.
- YOUR TURN: draw from the stock (two cards heads-up, one at a table of four) OR take the whole discard pile; meld what you like; then discard one card to end the turn.
- THE FIRST MELD your side makes must be worth 50 points (15 if you are below zero, 90 from 1500, 120 from 3000). Jokers 50, twos and aces 20, K down to 8 ten, 7 down to 4 five.
- TAKING THE PILE: the top card must go straight into a meld — with two natural cards of its rank from your hand, or, if the pile is not frozen and you are already down, onto your meld of that rank or with a natural and a wild. The rest of the pile then joins your hand. A wild card discarded onto the pile FREEZES it (❄): from then on only two naturals from the hand will take it. Until your side has made its first meld the pile is frozen for you anyway.
- GOING OUT: a side with a canasta (two, heads-up) may go out by melding or discarding its last card — 100 bonus. A turn has to end with a discard, so a meld must leave you at least two cards unless you can go out. When the stock runs out the hand is scored as it stands.
- SCORING a hand: every card melded counts its value; a natural canasta is 500 more and a mixed one 300; red threes 100 each — or minus 100 each if the side never melded; going out 100. Every card still in a hand counts AGAINST that side. Points add up hand by hand; the first side over 5000 at the end of a hand wins.
Canasta strategy
The basics that turn knowing the rules into winning games — what to do first, what to keep, what to avoid.
- The pile is the game. A fat pile is worth more than any meld — hold pairs so you can take it, and never feed a rank the other side has melded while the pile is open.
- Freeze the pile with a wild when it is fat and the other side is more likely to take it than you are; unfreeze it by taking it, not by hoping.
- Get down early, then build: once your side is down you can take an open pile with a single card onto a meld, and every turn adds cards.
- Go for canastas before going out. A hand that goes out with one mixed canasta scores less than a hand that keeps building to two naturals.
- Save black threes for a fat pile — discarding one denies the next player the pile for a turn. Keep a couple in hand to go out on.
- Count your first-meld minimum before you draw: an ace and two kings is 40, not 50. Two aces and a joker is 90.
- At a table of four, meld onto your partner's melds and discard what they need — the melds are shared, the hands are not.
Canasta FAQ
- How many can play?
- Two, or four in partnerships with partners sitting across. Bots fill any empty seat.
- What are the rules of taking the pile?
- The top card must go straight into a meld: with two natural cards of its rank from your hand, or — if the pile is not frozen and you are already down — onto your meld of that rank or with a natural and a wild. A wild discarded onto the pile freezes it.
- What is a canasta worth?
- A meld of seven or more: 500 for a natural canasta, 300 for one with wild cards. You need one canasta to go out (two heads-up).
- How is a hand scored?
- Every card melded counts its value, plus canasta bonuses, red threes (100 each, 800 for all four) and 100 for going out, minus every card left in a hand. First side to 5000 wins.
