How to play Dots and Boxes

  1. A square grid of dots. Players take turns drawing one line between two dots that sit side by side, across or down (never diagonally). Who goes first is decided at random.
  2. Draw the FOURTH side of a box and the box is yours: it fills with your colour and your initial, you score a point, and you MUST draw another line. Close two boxes with one line and both are yours. Keep closing boxes and you keep drawing.
  3. A line that closes nothing ends your turn.
  4. When every box is claimed the game is over, and whoever holds the most boxes wins. A tie at the top is a draw.
  5. Two to four players. Pick the board when you make the table: 5×5 boxes (the standard, 36 dots), 3×3 (quick) or 7×7 (long).
  6. On your turn, tap anywhere near the line you want: the nearest line lights gold, and a tap draws it. The bar under the board counts the boxes left and the SAFE lines left: lines that give nobody a box. When the safe lines run out, somebody has to hand over boxes.

Dots and Boxes FAQ

How do you play Dots and Boxes?
Players take turns drawing a line between two dots that sit side by side. Whoever draws the fourth side of a box claims it, scores a point and draws again. When every box is claimed, the most boxes wins.
Do you have to go again after closing a box?
Yes. Closing a box always means drawing another line, so a player can take a whole chain of boxes in one turn, and has to draw one more line at the end of it.
How many can play?
Two to four. Bots fill any empty seat, and you can pick a 3×3, 5×5 or 7×7 board of boxes when you make the table.
What is a double-deal?
Taking a chain at the end of the game, you take all but the last two boxes and draw the far line instead, handing those two to your opponent. They then have to open the next chain for you. It is the move that wins most close games.
Can I play against the computer?
Yes. The house bot plays safe lines while it can, gives away as little as it can when it has to, and uses the double-deal when it pays.
Do I need an account?
No. Type a name and play — no signup, no download, nothing to install. Making an account is optional and only exists to keep your stats, nickname and preferences across devices.
Is it really free?
Yes, all of it. Every game on Board Game Universe is free to play, with no premium tier holding anything back.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. It runs in a mobile browser on phones and tablets as well as on a desktop — there is no app to download.
How do I play with my friends?
Start a table and send your friends the link. They open it, type a name, and sit down. Moves and table chat happen in real time.
Can I play against the computer?
Yes. Add a bot to any table and it plays a proper game — useful for filling a seat while you wait for a fourth.
